Water Softener Filter
A water softener filter is a great alternative to the traditional water softener. The typical water softener removes iron from the water that goes into your home by exchanging the iron elements with sodium. This turns the water from “hard” to “soft”, but not everyone wants to have water with high amounts of sodium. After all, the goal was not to have high sodium water, the goal was to remove the “hardness” caused by the iron. Filtration can give you the results you’re looking for without the downsides of traditional softeners.
When you start looking at a water softener filter you soon begin to see why they’re gaining in popularity. Rather than replacing the iron ions that make your sinks and bathroom fixtures turn orange with sodium ions that give the water an overly slippery feel, you can just filter out the unwanted ions and other contaminants without adding anything to the water.
Another downside to the traditional salt based water softener is that the resulting water is not that great for plants or for drinking, either by you or your animals. People will often go to the added expense of installing a reverse osmosis system into their home as well to remove other contaminants such as chlorine. Unfortunately, this sort of filtration also strips out all of the healthy minerals naturally present in water.
On the other hand, a water softener filter is really much more like a water treatment and conditioning system. These systems treat the water without using salts, chemicals or magnets. The resulting treated water comes out feeling smooth and gentle, not slippery or slimy. Since this type of system does not add salts to the water there is no risk of pipe corrosion.
A system like this use a special type of activated carbon, which is widely regarded as the most effective filtering medium for non-heated water. Since the water is treated right at the source where it comes into your home, there is no need for additional filtration anywhere else. All the risks associated with drinking or showing in chlorinated water are eliminated without having to install filters at every point of use.
One of the few cases in which you may actually want to consider using water softened with a salt ion exchange is with a dedicated line used for washing. When iron is replaced with salt, the water loses some of it’s surface tension properties and will work more effectively with soaps to bond with dirt. Soapy soft water will be less likely to leave a residue on car bodies after washing so is the preferred choice by auto detailers.
For this specific case, it’s possible to get an inline water filter for outdoor use that uses a water softener filter cartridge. This type of cartridge is easily replaced when the salt ions are used up and will make your job easier if car detailing is one of your hobbies or profession.
