How To Install Water Filters

Do you want clean, clear, odorless drinking water in your home? Water filters are available that you can install under your sink. It is not hard to do and you will have clean, fresh water free of the impurities it gathers on the way to your home.

There are different types of units you can buy, but they all use cartridges to filter contaminants from your water. The cartridge you need will depend on the level and type of contaminant present in your local water. Be sure to read the information carefully so you select the right type.

The filtration unit needs to be placed in the cupboard under the sink. It needs to be out of the way so it doesn’t interfere with access to the pipes. But, also accessible enough that changing the filter regularly does not become a chore. Position the apparatus where you want to install it and use the holes in the mounts to pencil marks on the wall where the screws will go.

You don’t need to be a tradesman to have the tools to do this job but you do need a couple of tools. A drill and a screwdriver are required to securely mount the filtration unit. An adjustable wrench is needed to undo and tighten the plumbing fittings when connecting the filter unit to the water supply.

Drill the holes for the screws in the wall of the cupboard under the sink. Lift the unit into place and using the screwdriver, insert the screws. Tighten them a little bit at a time until they are all secure. Then check that the unit is solidly attached and its weight won’t cause it to move or break free.

The filter works on the cold water flow and this will need to be turned off. Some homes have a shut off valve under the sink. If you don’t have one of these you will need to turn the water off at the meter where it flows into your property. Once the water is turned off allow excess water in the pipes to drain by turning on the faucet.

When the water is turned off and the lines drained disconnect the flexible hose that connects to the PVC pipe under your sink. There may be some water still left in the line so place a hand towel underneath to soak up any spills. Attach the hose to the filtration unit and then attach the flexible hose that comes with it to the PVC pipe.

Check the lines to make sure that you have connected them properly. You should be able to trace the line of hose from its entry to the cupboard through the unit and then on to the pipe that connects to your faucet. Turn the water flow back on and check for leaks. If there are none turn the faucet on and allow the water to run. There may be some discoloration from sediment at first but this will clear quickly.

It is important to remember to change the filter cartridges. The regularity required will be noted in the instructions that come with the unit. Water filters installed under the sink ensure you have clean and odorless drinking water in your kitchen.
