Techniques To Unfreeze Pipes
Generally in winter seasons many people like me have to face a common problem i.e. freezing of pipes. This kind of problem occurs in those areas where temperature goes below 0c in winter seasons. This seems to be a very small problem but sometimes in lack of attention pipes gets burst off.
Keep the doors and windows close to avoid direct entry of cold air inside the house. Direct impact of cold air results in gradual fall in temperature. Allow minimum exposes of pipes to the atmosphere during installation of water pipes in the house. Cover as much as length inside the walls or underground.
Now this topic is about how to unfreeze the pipes and how we can avoid these kinds of situations. When you get up in the morning and you find your taps not working means no water, then what to do.
There is also a simple way to avoid freezing of pipes in winter. Don’t close the taps or outlets tightly. Make some water come out of the taps slowly throughout the whole night. Let the taps drip continuously. This makes the continuation of water and do not allow the water to freeze. But this method waste water which is not desired at all.
Now its the time to defrost the pipe. Use hot air blower, hair drier for this. Aim at the frozen area of the pipe. Move the air blower across the pipe and let the temperature of pipe increase above the freezing point. Do not concentrate the blower at one place of pipe because it may crack or burst the pipe at once. Now let the defrost ice (water) come out of the tap.
Now check for cracks and burst in pipes. Close the cracks and burst temporarily with help of tools and clamps until you call a plumber. Rubber or still strips can help you for that. Avoid further cracking of pipes so does it carefully.
We should leave the taps dripping a little bit because running water can stop the freezing. This may also help but wastage of water is there.
Plastic pipes should be cut from the joint and replaced with a new piece exactly of the same length. Use any solvent to seal the gap completely.
