How To Defrost Your Pipes ?
A common winter problem is freezing of water pipes. This freezing in pipe causes a lot of problem. It not only stops the water supply of your house but also damage the pipes by exerting pressure on wall of pipes.
Freezing of pipes can be prevented by being little careful. However, sometimes things go out of your control and you can not help that. Suppose a situation when there is an electric cut in your society. Temperature of your home and surrounding area will go down and will result in freezing of pipes. Sometimes, the heating tape becomes ineffective and you don’t notice that till all the water changes into ice and stop coming through your faucets.
Once the pipe get frozen it becomes most important for you to melt that. A frozen pipe ceases the water supply as all of the water has converted into ice. You need water at any cost, so it becomes your top most priority to thaw the frozen pipe.
Here we will talk about different methods by which we can thaw a frozen pipe. One precaution that is mandatory to take before starting the process is to open the water supply in all the tabs. This will help the steam in going out that is formed because of water heating.
You can use an electric heat tape on the pipe and wait for it to thaw out. It is a good method to use as it slowly thaws the pipe and reduces the wear and tear on pipe. Use a heat tape certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory. Never wrap the heat tape back over itself as it could cause the heat tape to overheat and start a fire.
By use of hot water also, we can thaw the frozen pipe. Cover the pipe with a thick cloth or a towel before putting hot water on it. Continue the process till water start flowing through the taps.
Heat of a hand dryer can also help in melting low level freezing. By moving the dryer above frozen part of pipe, you can melt the ice. You need to be cautious while performing this and prefer to stand on a dry ground.
If water starts coming out of the tab, your problem is solved and you can enjoy the water supply. For proper elimination and melting of ice, leave the tab on for some duration. Check the pipes against any wear and tear.
