Piping System: Importance Of Pipes And Pipe Couplings
Pipe couplings form an important part of a piping system. Generally, pipes solve conveyance and distribution issues for liquid, gas, or hazardous materials. You see these pipes being used for residential plumbing, for forming drainage systems, and for industrial piping. Connecting these pipes together in a secure and efficient manner to create a piping system needs the use of certain accessories.
These accessories hold up the system so that each part is able to hold its own for its special purpose. The system includes such parts as the pipes themselves, couplings, fittings, caps, flanges, nipples, plugs and barbs.
How Pipe Couplings Work
Pipe couplings work by connecting two longer pipes or tubes to each other. Couplings consist of much shorter pipes. Couplings join two separate pipes that may or may not be of the same size. Other terms for this piping and plumbing fixture are adapter, reducer, or reduced coupling.
Now that you know what pipe couplings look like, you now have to learn how they actually connect pipes together. Pipe couplings connect pipes of any material, like cast iron, asbestos cement, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), glass fibre reinforced plastics, copper, copper alloy, and steel. Connecting pipes is done through by welding, soldering, or brazing. Other fittings are also necessary for a piping system, including those made for bends and turns and those made for the pipes to branch off.
The Use Of Copper Pipe Couplings
In certain cases that require a leak proof seal, we would need copper pipe couplings. Special fittings, which are particularly called pressed or crimped fittings, allow the pipes to connect in a unique process. These special fittings are manufactured with the sealant placed right inside them.
Pipes connect neatly and easily after the fittings slide under them. The pipes are permanently connected by crimping them with high pressure. It’s a fast and practical method to create a leak proof pipe coupling seal. Take note however that the special fittings could be purchased in specialized stores, and the method is more costly compared to ordinary methods of joining pipes.
